Young Music Makers (YMM)
Sing, move, dance, and explore simple instruments together in a friendly, safe and creative space! This is a fun-filled and engaging program designed for little music makers aged three months to five years old. Our youngest musicians learn together with a parent / caregiver and the preschoolers work toward independent music-making.
Percussion
Explore international beats, rhythms and songs in this high-energy percussion program! We’re talking about fun-filled lessons and jam sessions in ensembles including Latin percussion, Samba Afro drumming, Marimba bands, and much more.
Electronic Music Production
Deep dive into the dynamic world of electronic music making and production, led by experienced teachers with an intense passion for the craft. Create your own music and learn to recreate your favourite songs and sounds on computers. This program covers everything from basic beat-making techniques to advanced music production principles.
Turntablism
Find true expression in the art of manipulating vinyl records to make new music. Learn body tricks and beat juggling, plus how to mix, scratch and use the loop machine. You’ll also get to explore the basic drum kit, electronic drums, freestyling, beatboxing, dance and art grounded in hip-hop culture.
Group Singing
Calling all songbirds! Learn basic music theory and how to harmonize, blend and emote as you explore your own voice within a group. You’ll learn many pieces from different genres, and you’ll have many chances to perform throughout the year.
Musical Theatre
Acting, singing, movement, performing—learn it all! Learn to perform scenes and music with a focus on acting, singing, and coordination.
Junior Sing-along
Find your happy place and grow your vocal and instrumental skills through group song and group accompaniment. Explore the building blocks of pitch and rhythm in this program designed for kids in grades 4 to 7.
Senior Focus Choices
Dive into traditional and applied music theory and get expert help preparing for auditions. This program is perfect for you if you’re pursuing music education after high school or applying to post-secondary music schools. Students can take a specialized private or group class. Ages 16+
Senior Ensembles
Write, arrange and perform original and cover songs in a band. Focus on genres you choose like Jazz, Latin, Rock or Pop. Requirements: Some SoM experience and confidence in playing an instrument independently.
Hive
Hive drop-in Friday afternoons, for SoM youth ages 15 to 24 years, provides unstructured mentor support, rehearsal time and opportunities to work on projects like recording your own music. HIVE time is yours – SoM is here to support your growth as an emerging artist in whatever ways we can.
Alumni
For SoM students, ages 18 to 24, Alumni drop-in classes are Friday afternoons. Choose from electronic music, band, ensemble band, group, choir and turntablism and jam with other students. Alumni are also invited to join our concurrent Hive drop-in program.
55+ Uke Classes
For the young-at-heart over-55 crowd, these fun community-based classes are perfect for beginners and more advanced ukulele players! Learn how to strum, pick and finger pick in a range of genres and styles, with tunes and techniques tailored to your interests. Bring your own ukulele or borrow one from SoM for these classes.
Private Lessons
Private lessons are awarded to students who have shown good attendance in their group classes and who may benefit from additional support. The need for support can vary from students needing extra coaching in order to keep up with their group classes to students who are ready for a more intensive and personalized experience in addition to their group class. Private lessons are indispensable for those individuals aspiring to enter music at a post-secondary level, who wish to pursue a career in music or who are working on special projects.
